Network Byte OrderEdit
Network byte order is the convention used to represent multibyte integers when data moves through computer networks. It is designed to be a stable, interoperable way for hosts with different internal representations to interpret numbers the same way. In practice, network byte order is big-endian, meaning the most significant byte is transmitted first. This standardization is baked into the way many Internet protocols are defined and implemented, and it is reinforced in software stacks by a small set of conversion routines that translate values between a host’s native ordering and the network ordering used on the wire. - Endianness and network order
- Endianness is the order in which bytes of a multibyte value are arranged. Different computer architectures may store data in different orders, which can lead to misinterpretation if numbers are sent over a network without conversion.
