Sensitive Personal Data (SPD) refers to information that, because of its potential to reveal intimate or highly consequential characteristics about an individual, warrants stronger protections than ordinary personal data. In most privacy regimes, SPD covers categories such as race or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, genetic data, biometric data used for identification, health data, sex life or sexual orientation, and other data that reveal sensitive attributes. Because SPD carries a higher risk of discrimination, stigma, or harm if misused, lawmakers and regulators typically impose stricter conditions on collection, processing, storage, and sharing.
From a policy perspective, SPD sits at the intersection of individual autonomy, market efficiency, and legitimate public interests.
