A random field is a mathematical construct used to model spatially distributed phenomena whose values vary in a way that has both a deterministic structure and inherent randomness. Formally, it is a collection of random variables indexed by a multi-dimensional parameter, typically representing location in space and possibly time. In practice, a random field assigns to each location a random variable, and the joint behavior across locations captures both smooth variation and unpredictable fluctuations. This makes random fields central to disciplines from engineering and geostatistics to cosmology and image processing. In applications, the index set T is often a subset of a Euclidean space, such as T ⊆ R^d, where d is the number of spatial dimensions, and potentially time as an additional coordinate. The field is defined on a probability space (Ω, F, P) and written as X = {X_t : t ∈ T}, where each X_t is a real-valued (or vector-valued) random variable. A central practical feature is the finite-dimensional distributions: for any finite collection t1, …, tn ∈ T, the random vector (X_{t1}, …, X_{tn}) has a joint distribution. Formal definition
A random field is a set of random variables indexed by T, written as X = {X_t : t ∈ T}. The law of the field is the collection of all finite-dimensional distributions of (X_{t1}, …, X_{tn}) for all finite subsets {t1, …, tn} ⊆ T. If, for every t, X_t is real-valued (or vector-valued) and the map ω ↦ X_t(ω) is measurable, then X is well defined on (Ω, F, P). Gaussian random fields
A Gaussian random field is one where every finite collection (X_{t1}, …, X_{tn}) is multivariate normal. This class is analytically tractable because the distribution of the entire field is determined by its mean function m(t) = E[X_t] and its covariance function C(s, t) = Cov(X_s, X_t). Many practical models assume stationarity or isotropy in the covariance, leading to covariances that depend only on differences h = s − t or on the distance |s − t|. Stationarity, isotropy, and covariance structure
Stationarity means that statistical properties do not depend on absolute location, often implying Cov(X_s, X_t) = C(t − s). Gaussian random fields
As noted, Gaussian random fields (GRFs) are fully specified by their mean and covariance. They are widely used because conditional distributions remain Gaussian, enabling straightforward kriging-based prediction and uncertainty quantification.
